JONATHAN L. KATZ

A Radical Lawyer In a Suit

TOP-RATED BY WASHINGTONIAN MAGAZINE

AV-RATED BY MARTINDALE-HUBBELL

NATIONALLY-RECOGNIZED BY MAJOR MEDIA

Our criminal defense law partner Jon Katz is a radical in a suit. Rather than being a rebel without a cause radical, he is a radical for justice. Too often, too many lawyers and others with power in society become complacent in their position, with their income, and with their social standing. However, those fancy restaurant appetizers, gourmet salads, and fine wine that a well-paid lawyer's income can buy often are presented by laborers who too often are mistreated, with lettuce and grapes too often picket by mistreated migrant workers. Their office wastebaskets too often are emptied by underpaid workers who are taken advantage of for their socio-economic situation. The police cruising the neighborhood too often make arrests for actions that should not be criminalized (e.g., marijuana possession, prostitution, and drinking a cold one), against the wrong suspects, and with unacceptably intimidating tactics while carrying a gun, handcuffs, and the power to arrest.

If lawyers and others in positions of influence will not stand up for justice, who will? Nobody said that fighting for justice would be without struggle, discomfort, personal and financial risk, and fear. However, Jon and his law partner Jay Marks would not have it any other way.

Jon entered law school after many years fighting for social justice with such groups as Amnesty International. His undergraduate years at Tufts University reinforced that people must follow their convictions, even if that brings high financial and personal risks. He was determined not to let the many obstacles of law school and the legal profession sidetrack him from doing good, despite the many naysayers. Jon found his calling through the practice of criminal defense and Constitutional law. He defends people's rights regardless of the popularity of his clients or their causes, so long as he believes he is on the side of justice. Jon derives tremendous satisfaction from his work, and strives to become a better lawyer and person every step of the way. His clients and their families are among his best teachers and sources of inspiration.

Law school and the practice of law need to be radically reformed to have more of a human, compassionate and just face and heart. More and more lawyers are recognizing that, and even some of the most entrenched corporate law firms have developed spirited pro bono activities that sometimes go as far as defending those charged with capital murder and defending ACLU-type cases. Jon has found a powerful way to live and practice law that incorporates the lessons of Gerry Spence's Trial Lawyers College, the harmonious practice of t'ai chi, and the peaceful path of his teacher Jun Yasuda, as he recounts more fully here. Even when working long and tireless hours for the next trial, Jon does his best to reach a harmonious balance with his personal and professional life, sprinkled with humor and wonder. .

CLIENT FEEDBACK ON JON KATZ (more here)

"Jon, you are the best attorney in the world as far as I'm concerned. Thanks again for your work on my behalf and your optimistic energy." (From a criminal defense client).

"I want to take this opportunity to highly commend Jon Katz for his hard work and sincere dedication for defending me in my DWI charge several years ago. Prior to, during and after the trial, Jon made me feel comfortable, at ease and provided me with the sense and comfort of having an experienced and professional leading attorney by my side. With Jon defending me, I did not once feel, doubt or have any hesitation about the outcome of my trial. I would like to give Jon a million thanks once again and highly recommend him to anyone in need of a real criminal trial attorney."  (From a criminal defense client).

"Jonathan Katz is compassionate and understanding to his people and to his clients. He did not treat me like a number or a dollar sign but instead he is always present and pays attention and he is very professional. I would certainly recommend him to anyone else ." (From a criminal defense client).
